Upgrades

Yesterday, we finally bought a computer to upgrade the wife’s computer. She had been running an older computer with XP on it, and it was starting to get cranky. It works OK, but compared to even her laptop, it was slow. So, we bought her a new computer. I’m usually not one to buy commercial equipment as I prefer to build my own, but I couldn’t resist this one. And I couldn’t build it for her.

We got her an iMac. It’s one of the newer ones with an Intel dual-core processor running at 2.4 ghz. I picked up extra memory, so she has 3 gig in it. It’s also got an ATI 2600 radeon graphics card with 256 meg on it. Finally a 320gig HD which is a lot more than her old 60gig drive.

We got it home yesterday and it took all of about 10 minutes to get it on-line. Everything went smoothly. And one of the nice things is that it came with the OSX leapord upgrade in the box. I don’t think the apple rep at the store knew it was included. He gave me some paperwork so that I could send for the upgrade. It’s installing right now and so far it’s going smoothly. The big test will be when it restarts.

I really don’t have any experience with Mac products. They have always looked nice, but I’ve been a linux/AMD sort of guy. This is my first attempt at getting something like this up and running. So there will probably be lots more to come on the trials and tribulations of having a new system in the house.

Oh, and just for the record, my wife likes it so far. It’s a lot faster, the graphics are great! Now for the working parts. email, word processing, and so forth. Hopefully it will work. It’s already connected to the network printer so that’s a plus.

Stay tuned. Life gets more and more interesting everyday in the world of computers.

Ah, I have been looking at these for quite some time but haven’t had the nerve to make the leap. Let me know how it goes! My 2.8 Dual Core intel runs fine unless I am using winblows…LOL

It’s really nice. She loves it so far. I got all her email working on it. It comes with most things that you need. Plus a lot of graphics stuff. Plays DVD’s right out of the box. Wireless was a snap to setup. So I no longer have a cable strung across the room to her computer.

I’ve got a few things I want to try, but that will happen later. Just glad she got something she can use. ;-)
